The blue irregular glass cross for a headstone is made by hand from a single piece of blue kiln-fused glass with wavy edges. Kiln-fused glass

The cross is made from a single piece of kiln-fused glass about 10 mm thick – hence the wavy edges and a slightly different pattern in every piece.

Colour in the glass

The colour and the pattern are in the kiln-fused glass itself.

Slightly translucent glass

The glass lets a little light through, so the colour of the stone at the bottom of the recess affects the shade of the cross – it is worth taking the colour of the granite into account, light or dark.

Bonded into a recess

The cross is bonded with a flexible mounting adhesive into a recess milled into the stone tablet, flush with its surface.

Irregular glass cross for a headstone

The blue irregular glass cross for a headstone is a single piece of blue glass fused in the kiln, densely filled with round and oval bubbles of different sizes. The edges of the cross are wavy and irregular, and the arms and the foot end in sharp points. The crossbar sits high and the long lower arm narrows towards the foot, so the cross fits well into a vertical strip of the tablet beside the inscription.

The glass is slightly translucent, so the colour of the stone beneath the cross affects its shade of blue, and it is worth taking the colour of the granite into account: on light stone the cross will look lighter and more vivid, on dark stone deeper and darker. The cross is bonded into a recess milled into the stone tablet of the headstone, so that the glass lies flush with the tablet.

Features of the irregular glass cross

We make the irregular cross by hand in our own workshop, using glass fusing: the glass is fused in the kiln into a single piece with wavy edges. The colour and the bubbles are in the glass itself. Each piece is made individually, so the pattern of the glass differs slightly from the one in the photo.

The glass is about 10 mm thick. Because it is fused in the kiln, its thickness is slightly irregular, which is why the memorial mason matches the depth of the recess to the cross supplied.

The cross is designed solely to be bonded into a recess milled into the stone tablet of the headstone, that is, a hollow in the shape of the cross and as deep as the glass. It is bonded in with a flexible mounting adhesive so that the glass lies flush with the tablet. The memorial mason mills the recess from the DXF drawing generated by our online designer. The cross is not bonded onto the flat face of the tablet, it is not fitted into an opening cut right through the tablet and it does not come in a double-sided version.

You choose the width of the cross, and the height follows from the proportions of the design. There are 12 sizes (width × height), from 10 × 16 to 65 × 105.5 cm, in 5 cm steps of width.

Other widths to order

We can also make the irregular cross in another width, once agreed and quoted; the height then follows from the proportions of the design.

If you need a cross in a different size or a different shape, contact us. We will help you match the proportions and dimensions of the cross to the headstone design.

How is the irregular glass cross mounted?

The drawing shows six ways of fixing glass to a headstone. The irregular cross is mounted by method B only, in a recess milled into the stone tablet.

  1. B Seating the cross in a recess milled to the shape of the glass in the tablet and bonding it with a flexible mounting adhesive, flush with the tablet

Flexible adhesives absorb the stresses that build up at low temperatures, which is why the cross is bonded into the recess with a flexible adhesive only.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an irregular glass cross for a headstone take to make?

An irregular glass cross usually takes three to six weeks to make, depending on the size and on how much work the glass needs.

Is the cross transparent?

It is slightly translucent. The glass lets a little light through, which is why the colour of the stone at the bottom of the recess affects the shade of the cross. On light granite the blue will look lighter, on dark granite darker, so it is worth taking the colour of the tablet into account. We also make irregular crosses in opaque glass; where that is the case, we say so in the product description.

How do I order a cross for a headstone?

Ordering a glass cross is very simple. Choose the width and place your order through our online shop, or contact us and we will take care of it. When choosing, bear in mind the colour of the granite the cross will be bonded into. We can also make the cross in another width, agreed and quoted beforehand.

How is the irregular cross mounted?

The cross is bonded with a flexible mounting adhesive into a recess milled into the stone tablet of the headstone. The recess has the shape of the cross and the depth of the glass, so the glass lies flush with the tablet. The memorial mason mills the recess from the DXF drawing generated by the online designer; fused glass is slightly irregular in thickness, so the depth of the recess is matched to the cross supplied. The cross is not bonded onto the flat face of the tablet, it is not fitted into an opening cut right through the tablet and it does not come in a double-sided version.

A flexible adhesive absorbs the stresses that build up at low temperatures, which is why the cross is bonded in with a flexible adhesive only.

Will the cross be sent by courier?

Yes, we send the cross by courier.

Can you make another width or another shape?

Yes. We can make the irregular cross in another width, once agreed and quoted; the height then follows from the proportions of the design. From a technical drawing you supply we can also make another shape, such as a symmetrical cross, a heart or a circle.

Pieces like these are developed with the memorial mason and are always quoted individually.

Do you need an irregular cross in another width?

We can also make the irregular cross in another width, agreed and quoted beforehand; the height then follows from the proportions of the design. Get in touch with us.
