Asymmetric fused glass cross for a headstone

from €733,00 to €890,00 incl. VAT · variants: 7 · in stock

An asymmetric cross built up in layers and fired in a kiln – glass fusing gives every piece a pattern of its own. Every cross is made individually, to the dimensions and details of the particular headstone, so it keeps a character of its own, a striking depth of colour and glass that lets the light through. The textured pattern of the cross stays clearly visible, and its surface catches the sunlight, which emphasises the modern, elegant look of the headstone. The cross can also be made as a single-sided version, to be fixed straight onto the face of the stone.

This product is supplied to the memorial trade. If you need it in a size other than those listed in the configurator, contact us to agree individual dimensions and a quotation.

Kiln-fused glass

The glass is fired in a kiln until it fuses into a single body, which gives each piece its shape, its thickness and a pattern of its own.

Hand-painted pattern

In the colour versions the pattern is painted on the inner face of the glass and stays clearly visible.

The glass lets light through

The glass is translucent – in sunlight the colour lights up and the pattern gains depth.

Fixed on or built in

A cross is fixed to the face of the tablet or set into a recess cut in it – the headstone design decides which.

Glass cross for a headstone

The cross is made by glass fusing: layers of glass are laid up by hand and then fired in a kiln into a single piece. The texture of the pattern is therefore neither a print nor an engraving but the result of the firing – no two pieces from the same design ever come out alike.

The cross is made from fused glass with a hand-worked decorative pattern. The colours chosen and the texture of the glass make the surface catch the sunlight, so the colours become more intense and the decoration gains a pronounced depth.

Features of the glass cross

The asymmetric cross is made by hand in our own workshop, using glass fusing. Firing in the kiln gives each piece its shape, its size and a character of its own.

The decorative face of the cross is coloured and finished by hand, so the pattern stays clearly visible and holds its strong colour. The glass lets light through, so in sunlight the colour lights up and the pattern gains depth.

The cross is made to sit in a recess cut specially into the stone tablet of the headstone. It can also be supplied as a single-sided version, to be fixed straight onto the face of the stone with a flexible MS-polymer adhesive.

The glass crosses come in several standard sizes, to suit headstone tablets 60 cm wide in a range of heights. That makes it easy for a memorial mason to choose the right size for a particular headstone design.

Bespoke sizes

Every cross can also be made to an individual size, to suit the design and requirements of the memorial.

If you need the model shown here in a different size, or a cross in entirely non-standard dimensions, contact us. We will help you match the proportions and the dimensions of the piece to the memorial design you have drawn up.

How is a glass cross fixed?

The method of fixing depends on the headstone design. The drawing shows six ways of fixing glass to a headstone; for crosses we use the first three.

  1. A Fixed with a flexible MS-polymer adhesive straight onto the face of the tablet
  2. B Set into a recess cut into the face of the tablet, then bonded in place
  3. C Built in between two stone tablets

Whichever method of fixing you choose, use a fixing that allows for movement in cold weather, such as a flexible MS-polymer adhesive.

Frequently asked questions

How long does an asymmetric glass cross for a headstone take to make?

An asymmetric glass cross usually takes three to six weeks to make, depending on the size of the cross and the amount of handwork involved.

Does the cross let light through?

Yes. This cross lets light through – sunlight passes through the glass, so the colour lights up in the sun. Some models in this range are made without light transmission; where that is the case, we say so in the product description.

How do I order a cross for a headstone?

Ordering is straightforward. Place the order through our online shop, or contact us and we will place it for you. We can also make the cross to other dimensions, a different height or a different arm width for example – once this has been agreed and quoted.

Do you send the crosses by courier?

Smaller sizes are sent by standard courier. Larger sizes have to go by a specialist pallet carrier, or we can deliver them ourselves.

How is the decorative cross fixed to the headstone?

How it is fixed depends on the headstone design. The glass cross can be:

  • fixed to the face of the stone with a suitable adhesive, or
  • built in between the stone tablets.

Whichever method of fixing you choose, use a fixing that allows for movement in cold weather, such as a flexible MS-polymer adhesive.

Can you make the decoration in another shape?

Yes. As well as the asymmetric cross, we can make a circle, a decorative heart, a symmetrical cross or any other bespoke shape to a technical drawing you supply.

Pieces like these are developed with the memorial mason and are always quoted individually.

Do you need a cross in a different size?

Crosses are matched as standard to headstone tablets 60 cm wide, but we make every piece to the dimensions given by the memorial mason – including small decorations about 10–15 cm wide. From a technical drawing we can prepare a circle, a heart, a symmetrical cross or decorative strips; work of this kind is quoted individually. Contact us.

As well as glass panels for headstones and memorials, we also make personalised memorial plaques, full size and small, which can be fixed to the face of the headstone or to granite pillow memorials. They can serve as the main plaque for the person who has died or as an additional memorial plaque, mounted on a granite pillow or on a purpose-made stand.
