Interlocking glass hearts – a headstone decoration made by hand from purple kiln-fused glass with bubbles. The glass is 10 mm thick and slightly translucent, so the colour of the granite beneath the glass affects the shade of the hearts. The hearts are designed to be bonded into a recess milled in the stone tablet of the headstone, flush with the tablet.

Two hearts in one piece
The two hearts are fused in the kiln into one piece of glass 10 mm thick, and the pattern of the glass differs slightly from piece to piece.
Colour in the glass
The colour and pattern of the hearts are in the kiln-fused glass itself.
Slightly translucent glass
The glass lets a little light through, so the colour of the stone at the bottom of the recess affects the shade of the hearts – it is worth matching them to the colour of the granite, light or dark.
Set into a recess in the tablet
The hearts are bonded with a flexible mounting adhesive into a recess milled in the stone tablet of the headstone, flush with the tablet; the stonemason mills the recess from the DXF drawing.

Purple interlocking glass hearts with bubbles for a headstone are two openwork hearts joined into a single piece of kiln-fused glass. The larger heart sits on the left and slightly higher, the smaller one on the right and lower down, and the stone can be seen through their open centres. The dark purple glass has a plum tone and bubbles inside it. The glass is slightly translucent, so the colour of the stone beneath the glass, at the bottom of the recess, affects the shade of the hearts, and it is worth matching them to the colour of the granite: on light stone they will look lighter and more vivid, on dark stone deeper and darker. The hearts are 10 mm thick. They are made by hand in our workshop from kiln-fused glass, so the pattern of the glass in each piece differs slightly from the one in the photo. The glass is slightly translucent and lets a little light through, so it is worth matching the colour of the hearts to the colour of the tablet they will be bonded into. The hearts are bonded with a flexible mounting adhesive into a recess milled in the stone tablet of the headstone, so that the glass sits flush with the tablet. They come in one version, with no double-sided option.
You choose the width of the hearts, and the height follows from the proportions of the design. There are 12 sizes (width × height), from 10 × 8 to 65 × 53 cm, in 5 cm steps of width. Other widths can be made to order, once agreed and quoted.

Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to make the hearts?
Interlocking glass hearts usually take three to six weeks to make, depending on the size and on how much work the glass needs.
Are the hearts transparent?
They are slightly translucent. The glass lets a little light through, which is why the colour of the stone beneath the glass, at the bottom of the recess, affects the shade of the hearts. On light granite the colour will be lighter, on dark granite darker, so it is worth matching the hearts to the colour of the tablet they will be bonded into.
Will the piece be sent by courier?
Yes, the hearts are sent by courier.
How are the interlocking glass hearts mounted?
Interlocking hearts are bonded with a flexible mounting adhesive into a recess milled in the stone tablet of the headstone. The recess has the shape and depth of the glass, so the hearts sit flush with the tablet. The stonemason’s workshop mills the recess following the outline of the glass in the DXF drawing from our online designer. The hearts are not fixed to the flat surface of the tablet, no window is cut right through the stone for them, and they do not come in a double-sided version.
Can you make the decoration in another shape?
Yes. From a technical drawing you send us we can make a circle, a cross, decorative strips or any other shape.
Work like this is prepared together with the stonemason’s workshop and is quoted individually every time.
Do you need interlocking hearts in another width?
We can also make interlocking hearts in another width, agreed and quoted beforehand; the height then follows from the proportions of the design. Get in touch with us.
